As my vehicle travelled from Somnath in Gujarat to Diu , I witnessed a rare species of palm trees. I had never seen it before & it mesmerized me.
I questioned the driver and came to know few details about the tree. It prevents cyclonic storms to certain extent & withstands the cyclone.
As I came home, I researched further information & came to know that it is a Triassic tree and is common in some parts of Africa. Even the Pharaohs tomb in Egypt had this tree fruits and children in Egypt eat its flesh. A local drink known as Tadi is prepared in Diu.
I also got to know that the locals have a belief that if a friend plants this tree at ones home, it will become a female palm tree otherwise if we plant on our own, it becomes male.
Some believe that the palm trees were brought by the Portuguese and some say that it has remained since the time Indian land broke down from African land.
